Introduction:
Sierra Leone, a nation brimming with youthful energy, is taking a momentous step towards ensuring that this vibrant demographic has a say in shaping their sexual and reproductive health (SRH) future. A two-day workshop, held at the Sierra Leone Peace Museum from January 30th-31st, 2024, marked the beginning of a collaborative effort to co-create a national Adolescent and Youth (AY) Inclusion Mechanism.
A Vision Driven by Young People
This initiative, spearheaded by young people themselves, recognizes the critical role adolescents and youth play in the formulation, implementation, and monitoring of Family Planning (FP) and SRHR policies. The Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MOHS), the National Secretariat for Reproductive Health and Adolescent Health (NSRTP), and the RMNCAH+N CSO Coalition (TAAC) joined hands with AY partners to make this vision a reality.
The Workshop: A Catalyst for Change
The workshop brought together 25 participants, including representatives from the Ministry of Health (MoH), to map out the future of the AY Mechanism. Key takeaways from the insightful discussions included:
Harnessing the Power of Youth: Sierra Leone’s youthful population is a powerful force for positive change. The AY Mechanism will provide a platform for their voices to be heard on critical issues like FP, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and SRH.
A Holistic Approach: The focus starts with FP but aims to encompass a broader spectrum of health concerns, fostering holistic youth well-being.
Building a National Force: The AY Mechanism aspires to become a nationwide movement, empowering young people across the country.
Co-Creating the Future: The Terms of Reference
Through engaging group activities, the participants co-developed the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the AY Mechanism. This crucial document outlines the framework for its coordination, facilitation, and long-term sustainability. Key areas addressed in the ToR include:
Leadership Structure: Establishing a clear and representative leadership body.
Responsibilities and Tasks: Defining the core functions of the AY Mechanism.
Reporting and Coordination: Ensuring effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders.
Sustainability: Identifying strategies to secure long-term financial and operational support.
Evaluation and Review: Establishing mechanisms for continuous improvement.
Vision for Expansion: Exploring avenues for the AY Mechanism’s growth and impact.
Taking Action: The Road Ahead
The next steps are crucial in bringing the AY Mechanism to life. The co-created ToR will be shared with key institutions like the National School and Adolescent Health Program Manager, NSTRP, and the RMNCAH+N Director for review and feedback. Following this, the National AY Steering Committee will be confirmed, and leadership roles will be assigned. Finally, the rollout of the AY Mechanism at the district level is planned for March 2024.
This workshop marks a significant step towards empowering young Sierra Leoneans to take charge of their health and well-being. The AY Inclusion Mechanism has the potential to be a transformative force, shaping a brighter future for adolescents and youth across the nation.
